Kiss under the overpass

Kiss under the overpass, 2000, exhibited as part of Spaces between at Marios, Fitzroy

Really hugging,
crushing each other in,
a hard, hot embrace,
oblivious.

Twister

Twister, 2001, oil on linen, exhibited as part of Natural disasters at Marios, Fitzroy

The twisting vortex touches the ground.
No damage, no harm here.
The only built things, the straight highway,
the dry irrigation gully it crosses,
impervious to the raging wind.

Crossing paths

Crossing paths, 2000, oil on linen, has not been exhibited.

Running.
In bare feet.
Feeling the earth,
the hot sand and stones.
Stretching out,
picking up speed.

And, when you least expect it,
a chance encounter.

Running after the red dog

Running after the red dog, 2000, acrylic and pen on paper,
exhibited as part of Works on paper at Marios in 2002

Crunching of boots,
pounding hearts,
panting, gasping,
each breath a billowing cloud,
through swirling snow.

We hardly see,
but the red dog is there,
always ahead,
our beacon,
leading us home.

Getaway

Getaway, 1995, oil on linen, New work at Marios Cafe, Fitzroy

Bang! Bang!
We’re getting away,
with nothing but our lives,
most of our skin,
a couple of hot pistols
and the car.

Chocolate paddlepop dingo

Chocolate paddlepop dingo, 1995, oil on linen, New work at Marios Cafe, Fitzroy

There’s not much shade around here.
This spot is cool.
And its my favourite flavour.

The sky clear and bright.
The sand is hot.
Come sundown, I’m off for a bite and a drink.
But for now this is just fine.
Sweet.

Leggo lookout

Leggo lookout, 1994, oil on linen, New work at Marios Cafe, Fitzroy
Having a look over the top of the piece of leggo
was one of the coolest things to do on the plain.

Its funny how much difference that small elevation made,
how much further you could see.

Red cubes at dawn

Red cubes at dawn, 2001, acrylic on paper, exhibited as part of Works on paper at Marios, Fitzroy, 2002

In the cool air, in the soft light,
bird song from distant trees,
two shapes rise up in the field ahead,
uncanny, perfect.

Blue dog, red sky

Blue dog, red sky, 1995, acrylic on paper, exhibited as part of Works on paper at Marios, Fitzroy, 2002

Flying, above the fray.
Pure joy.

Parade

Parade, 2003, oil on linen, exhibited as part of JFK at Marios, Fitzroy

The carriage turns and begins to descend to the underpass.
There is a sense of foreboding, in the crowd, in the sky, in the air itself.

Tackle

Tackle, 1998, oil on linen, exhibited as part of the Footy exhibition at the Continental Cafe, Prahran

Running hard.
Dirt under foot.
Twilight fading. It's almost time to go in.

Heavy breathing.
A call from a team mate.
A grunt and a thud as you collide.
The smell of the earth as you lift your face from the ground.

Overall, walking on the moon was a pleasurable experience

Overall, walking on the moon was a pleasurable experience1998, oil on linen, exhibited as part of Spaced out at Marios, Fitzroy

Once our tasks were completed we had half an hour of free time.
Needless to say, we made the most it.

Wooooo Hooooo!

We were chased by a UFO

We were chased by a UFO,1998, oil on linen, exhibited as part of Spaced out at Marios, Fitzroy

It wasn't fear but a kind of exhilaration. And even though you'd think a UFO would be able to catch a couple of people on foot, it was as if we were flying, effortlessly keeping ahead of the persistent little dude.

Hot pursuit

Hot pursuit1998, oil on linen, exhibited as part of Spaced out at Marios, Fitzroy

Our intrepid heroes are closing in on... whatever made this crop circle.
The mystery explained?
Quickly, that way!

X marks the spot

X marks the spot, 1998, oil on linen, exhibited as part of Spaced out at Marios, Fitzroy

The scene is a show stopper.
The federal agents are on the case, ready for anything.
Luckily for the whole world!
Action!

09.36am

09.36am, 1997, oil on linen, as part of the On the run exhibition at Marios, Fitzroy

Going like clockwork.
Calm.
In control.
Actually, this is fun, especially with the ray guns.
Smile for the camera.

Surrender

Surrender, 1997, oil on linen, as part of the On the run exhibition at Marios, Fitzroy

That's the way it goes. But every once in a while it goes the other way, too.

'Put the guns down. Put the guns down, slowly. Hands in the air. Down on your knees. Slowly.'

Icy pole forest

Icy pole forest, 1996, oil on linen, as part of New work exhibited at Marios, Fitzroy

Charge!
Running flat out through the forest, straight at the foe.
Cowgirl's edged ahead, picking 'em off one by one at full tilt.
Dogman is gaining, in his cammo green pelt.

Set up

Set up, 1996, oil on linen, as part of New work exhibited at Marios, Fitzroy

She's chill,
Cowgirl sheriff awaiting the bad guys.
Tipping back in her chair,
on her porch,
faithful pooch at her side,
ready for trouble.

Cops or hoods?
Two behind the tan sedan,
covering the one with the shotgun working around behind her.
They haven't seen the menace above.
The jets are moving so fast the blasting roar of their engines will only hit after they've passed.

Merging

Merging, 1996, oil on linenas part of New work exhibited at Marios, Fitzroy

It feels great to be stretching out, really running,
going with the flow of the traffic.
Dogman curving down the on-ramp,
under the flyover,
finds himself in stride beside Cowgirl,
as naturally as fate.

'Use the Force, Luke'

'Use the Force, Luke' , 2000, oil on linen, exhibited as part of Spaces between at Marios, Fitzroy

The surge of the powerful rocket engine pushing me back into my seat,
my wingmen bobbing and ducking close by,
wheelie bin anti-aircraft towers rushing by,
coming up fast the dogs guarding the entry drain that would destroy the death-star lane,
if only I can get my shot home...

Suspense

Suspense, 2000, oil on linen,  as part of Spaces between exhibited at Marios, Fitzroy

The last light from the sky of early evening barely penetrates the narrow allyways of the city. It gives the merest hint of the assassin lying in wait; a blue sweaty sheen on the forehead, a glint of dull metal of the pistol's barrel. The target is ahead but turns sharply under the city light as he hears, what...
Will he join the refuse in the wheelie bin? Will his blood spill down the drain?

Skipping girl over the top

Skipping girl over the top, 2000, oil on linen, as part of Spaces between exhibited at Marios, Fitzroy

High flying, daredevil girl skips fearlessly over the laneway, across the ladder and above a
scene of lusty desperation, destitution, hazard and ambush. Mini fighters thrill the crowds
with their under-the-bridge antics. Our hero keeps the ladder steady and his best friend
wants to say hello.
There's a little guy over there hanging out above the roof top patio.

The gate was left open

The gate was left open, 1993, oil on linen, exhibited as part of The Great Guinea Pig Massacre at the Continental Cafe, Prahran
The full moon floods the backyard with lovely silver light. It washes over the Hills Hoist, over the garden beds and over the tree up in the corner that the boy of the house virtually lives in. It illuminates the strange shapes on the lawn that are the guinea pig hutches the dad made. It spills down through the side gate and into the front yard.

Ye'll take the high road and I'll take the autostrada

Ye'll take the high road and I'll take the autostrada, 1994, oil on linen, Exquisite sentences group show with Michael Pogia and Tristan Sime at Gallery Gecko, The Napier Hotel.
It seemed like a good idea at the time. Bloody toll roads! We're on a budget. But this! These mountains are endless. And now pigs!
The freedom, the energy, the joy of running. Our heroic couple, Dogman and Cowgirl are unconstrained by a metal box, by worry and fear and rules. Can't there be humour in being stuck behind a herd of pigs with flies all over their bums.

Monumental Dog

Monumental dog, 2001, oil on linen exhibited as part of Natural disastersMarios Fitzroy

Standing tall and strong on the plain is the Monumental dog. He is unperturbed by the volcano erupting behind him, a great cloud of ash flying to the heavens, lava and fire pouring forth. Equally, the twirling swirling brooding ripping-things-up twister is of no concern.

People come running from all around, across the plains and over the dry river bed, to this place of refuge, this haven, calm, the eye of these storms.

Here by the pond, the comfort of a hug and a faithful friend make everything okay.

Desert dinking super soaker drive-by

Desert dinking super soaker drive-by, 1999, oil on linen, exhibited as part of On the run at Marios Fitzroy

Fast-moving fugitive lovers, rude, nude and sexy.
Armed and dangerous, in a playful schoolyard, neighbourhood kind of way.
There’s a kid climbing that slide over there, on the other side of the road.
Our super soaker brandishing cyclists are in the rough,
ready to bless the parched world with life-giving water, right in the eye.
Another beautiful day.

A quiet rural police station

A quiet rural police station, 1999, exhibited as part of On the run at Marios Fitzroy

A self timer cheeky snapshot, a postcard to the law, with love from our fugitive lovers.
Tough, rude, daring baring.
A beautiful day for a mooning.

And only 50p for half an hour

And only 50p for half an hour, oil on linen, exhibited as part of Exquisite sentences group show with Michael Pogia and Tristan Sime at Gallery Gecko, The Napier Hotel, 1994

Peace and tranquility, a moment out of a busy life for our heroic couple, Cowgirl and Dogman.
The deck chairs in Hyde Park on a rare perfect London summer’s day.
Stealing some chair time, outlaws all the way.
A relationship, a mood, a perspective,.
An untroubled sky, an upturned chair in the distance.
Together, at rest.
A pause in the midst of movement.
